How to Choose the Best Mattress? Tips While Buying a Mattress

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 03 5th, 2010

There are many types of mattresses available in the market and it is very difficult to choose a mattress. Everybody will not like a particular type of mattress, as the choice and tastes differ among people. Some people like a very light mattress while some like hard surface mattresses.

If you want to buy a mattress there are 4 important points to be kept in mind:

Soft or hard mattress: It is best to choose a mattress by lying down on it for a minute and giving it a test. Some people like a mattress that is little soft while others like very soft mattresses. Do not just check the brand name and buy a mattress, test and then buy.

Durability: The mattress should be very comfortable and the quality of the materials used should be very good, so that it can last for years.

Warranty: The competition in the mattress industry is picking up and there are companies which provide 20 years warranty, so buy a mattress which at least provides 10 years warranty.

Space: Buy the mattress according to the size of the bed. The measurements of beds are different, so buy the right ones. If you are single then buy a single mattress and if two people sleep then buy a double bed mattress so that you have enough space to sleep and roll on the bed.

It is very difficult to suggest a good mattress, as there are many opinions on each and every mattress available in the market. So, it is advised to judge the mattresses by keeping the above points in mind while buying a mattress.

Consumer Reports Mattress Ratings – The Good News and Bad News

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 02 23rd, 2010

If you are looking for mattress ratings from a credible source, such as Consumer Reports, there’s good news and bad news.

The Bad News

Consumer Reports does not rate mattresses. There are a couple of reasons for this, they say. First, their testers disagree on which mattresses are most comfortable. As a result, Consumer Reports says that mattress choice is largely a matter of personal preference.

Second, Consumer Reports says that model names from the top mattress brands differ from store to store. As a result, they say it is impossible to compare models. In addition, they say that even for mattresses that are similar, there are differences in important characteristics that can affect comfort, such as quilting, padding, springs, etc.

Consumer Reports, however, does offer some sound general advice on mattress shopping, such as the importance of lying on different beds to see which one you personally prefer. But in regard to which mattress is best, they will not be of much, if any, help.

The Good News

Is it futile, then, to search for which mattresses may be best? Probably not — if you know where to look. A terrific source of mattress information can be found on hundreds, if not thousands, of online message boards that are scattered across the web.

People often use these message boards to ask others which mattresses they think are best. People then reply, often giving advice based on their own mattress ownership experience. The responses tend to be very informative, credible and free of “guerilla marketers” — people within the mattress industry who provide bogus online mattress reviews to sway consumer opinion one way or the other.

By the way, you don’t necessarily have to post a mattress question yourself on a message board. You can simply search the web for existing message board threads about mattresses or a particular mattress type or brand you are interested in.

And while you may not find out which mattresses are best on a model level, you will get a good sense of which is best on a brand level, and that can be very valuable information.

A Guide To Top-Rated Mattresses

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 02 9th, 2010

With so many different mattresses and brands available looking for your next mattress can be rather daunting. To make your choice easier you should try to buy one of the top-rated mattresses from a leading mattress manufacturer. While not exhaustive, the following mattress reviews will help you narrow down your search for your next mattress.

Below is a concise mattress review of the top brands of mattresses on the market today. Each mattress manufacturer offers something slightly different so choosing the best mattress is really deciding on what your requirements are and how much you want to spend.

Sealy Posturepedic Mattress

Sealy have been making mattresses since 1818 and is the largest selling brand in the United States. Because Sealy mass-produces mattresses in such large numbers, the company affords today’s mattress shopper the best mid priced mattress sets available. Sealy offers a wide selection that blends comfort and durability with value to provide the best mid priced mattresses. As well as the Sealy Posturepedic mattress, there is also the Sealy TrueForm mattress, which incorporates memory foam in its build.

Simmons Beautyrest Mattress

Pocket coil mattresses offer one big advantage over traditional spring mattresses: you aren’t disturbed by your partner’s tossing and turning. Unlike conventional spring mattresses, each spring is contained in its own pocket, so move movement of one spring doesn’t cause movement of other around it. The pocket coil mattress isn’t new; Simmons has been producing a pocket coil mattress since 1925. Trademarked as the “Do Not Disturb” mattress, Simmons claims that its pocketed coil reduces more motion between partners than any other mattress in the industry today. Depending on the size of the mattress and other options, the Simmons Beautyrest ranges from mid-price range to expensive.

Jamison Smart Coil Mattress

Inner springs aren’t new, however Jamison has taken the innerspring a stage further. Jamison took the world’s best coil – the tempered steel, fine wire LFK coil which is open-ended and double offset – and engineered it to produce the Jamison Smart Coil. Smart Coils are put together with alternating right-turn and left-turn construction. This means that when weight is applied, the two coils work in tandem, thereby reducing partner disturbance. You can find this inner spring system in the Jamison Balance, Equalizer, and Vita Pedic mattresses. Jamison mattresses may not be as well known as the big players like Serta or Sealy, but they have a reputation for making excellent mattresses. Prices of Jamison mattress range from above mid-price to expensive.

Tempur-Pedic Mattress

If you’ve been looking for a new mattress you’ve probably heard about memory foam. This new and amazing material responds to body heat and weight to mould to the exact shape of the sleeper’s body. What this means is that weight is distributed evenly and therefore optimal support is given whilst sleeping and so almost completely eliminates pressure points. This visco-elastic material first saw use in hospitals as an aid to sleep for those with back problems or pressure sores, but has recently been introduced to the general public. Tempur-Pedic was the company that pioneered the research and use of this new mattress. Many other manufacturers have now developed their own version of memory foam mattresses but a Tempur-Pedic memory foam remains the best. Tempur-Pedic mattresses aren’t cheap but you’re buying the last technical advances in mattress design.

Symbol Mattress Reviews

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 01 31st, 2010

When picking out the best mattress, most consumers look at quality, comfort, and price range. They want to get the most quality and comfort for the lowest price possible. Symbol mattresses offer the best of all three worlds. They deliver very durable products which offer comfort through the most modern bedding technologies, and all for a fraction of the price that similar mattresses sell for.

Usually, a low price tag means lower quality or that corners have been drastically cut in the manufacturing process, but it is the exact opposite here. Symbol is able to slash prices by making their own springs, coils, frames, and even processing their own foam padding. Many would assume a company taking so much initiative to create their own parts would increase prices, but it actually enables this company to trim prices while increasing the value in every mattress.

It is true some of the mattresses made by Symbol are not high luxury or top of the line, but they do offer a higher level of comfort than regular mattresses at a very affordable price. Not everyone can afford to spend thousands of dollars on a fully loaded bed, but Symbol is designing great mattresses that offer many features of those expensive beds at a fraction of the cost.

Mattress reviews mostly come down in favor of these products, whether you look at high end luxury mattresses with all of the modern features or a more basic spring system with the comfort of a pillow top or memory foam.

Two mattress types that consistently draw great reviews are made from natural latex and memory foam.

The Symbol latex mattress takes center stage among all beds in its price range. Completely natural and hypo-allergenic, it surrounds the body and conforms to your natural sleeping positions for literally the best night of sleep you could ever ask for. This material supports your body to a higher degree than other bed materials, relieving aches and pains that often result from sleeping on other bed surfaces.

Another option for great support of the neck, back, and other joints is the Symbol Comfortec mattress. It uses innovative memory foam, which conforms to the body and balances body weight across the bed. It literally memorizes your body shape, just as the name suggests!

Symbol mattresses offer a large range of features, but they all share a lower price tag than comparable mattresses on the market today. From consumers looking for high end luxury bedding to those in search for a child’s bed or seeking reasonable comfort on a budget, Symbol has a perfect match for everyone.

Mattress Comparison Ratings

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 01 30th, 2010

Mattress Ratings are the classification of different types of mattresses and may not be very important to the mattress shopper. Unfortunately, the shopper must go out and deal with the mattress salesman since a mattress feels different to each person, and only the person shopping for one can decide. A pad or mat placed on the top of a bed for us to sleep on it is called a mattress.

The Arabic meaning of the word mattress is “to throw” which literally shows how in ancient times cushions were thrown on floors for sleeping. To make the mattress further up from the ground a mattress is placed on top of a platform or bed. Mattresses are of different types depending on their make and quality. From ancient times mattresses have been made with a variety of natural materials, including feathers, hay and straw. Modern day mattresses are made up of latex or chemicals like Polyurethane etc. Mattresses may be of foam, water or air filled or filled with natural or nylon fibers.

Nowadays organic mattresses are being prepared from soft cotton. The mattresses should be comfortable, soft, strong, resilient, machine washable and void of toxic chemicals that might be inhaled during sleep. The material used to make a mattress should be absorbent and breathable, increasing air circulation and reducing perspiration. Due to further research and development more mattresses are being developed which are cool in summers and warm in winters, fire and dust mites resistant. Mattress comparison ratings are done to classify the different variety of mattresses for selling them in the market.

Mattress comparison ratings are done on the basis of the following points – Special features, advantages, disadvantages, user profile and cost. The mattresses are tested using a variety of measuring instruments and also tested as to how they will perform in a live home condition. The mattresses to be sold are further rated on quality and performance. A mattress has a warranty or guaranty with it depending on the retail store. A guaranty is a return policy stating that you can return the mattress to the store if you are unhappy or uncomfortable. The property of firmness (hard to soft) of memory foam is used in determining comfort. Firmness is measured by Indentation Force Deflection of foam. IFD 10 is soft, IFD 20 is semi rigid while IFD12- IFD-16 is firm. Thus Comparison-shopping is an excellent means of getting the best possible deal for a given product.

Stearns And Foster Mattress Reviews

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 01 30th, 2010

Like all mattress manufacturers, Stearns and Foster changes the names of its collections on a seeming monthly basis. It isn’t the only manufacturer that does this. Many change names, call them completely different names when there is basically no difference between them, and create unique collection names for specific stores. This is done to make it almost impossible for the consumer to compare one against another. So when doing a review of Stearns and Foster mattresses ignore ‘collections’ and concentrate on the basic constituents of the mattress.

First off, a Stearns and Foster mattress is one of the best bed mattresses on the market today. However, with the company offering over 1,200 mattress sets it’s virtually impossible to rate one against another and decide if it is good value for money. So, when shopping, look at the constituents of the mattress and know exactly what you’re paying for.

There are 4 parts to a mattress set. There’s the boxspring (this is discussed later) and the mattress, which consists of Mattress Style, Comfort Layers and Core Support.

Starting from the top of the bed mattress we have the Mattress Style. First there’s the fabric that covers it. The fabric can be many things including, polyester, silk, cashmere, alpaca and silk to name a few. The fabric used can increase the cost significantly, so, if you’re trying to find the best deal, ask yourself if you really need silk; polyester will last just as long as any other, more expensive fabric – no matter what the salesperson tells you.

The main determining factor of the style is what ‘comfort’ surface has been attached to it. There are five finishes; Tight Top, Pillow Top, Euro Pillow Top, Euro Top and Box Top. The Tight Top is a plain bed mattress. A Pillow Top is an added layer of comfort material that’s been attached and has gusseted corners, making it look as though a large flat pillow has been placed on top. A Euro Pillow Top is one with more comfort materials. A Euro Top has the same amount of comfort material but has been attached directly – it looks like a thin mattress has been placed on top of the bed mattress. Finally, The Box top is the same as the Euro Top but is has even more comfort materials.

These various Tops have become quite popular lately. However, there are two things to consider; one, these do increase the cost; two, it is almost guaranteed that these Tops will be the first part of the mattress to wear out and because the are directly attached you’ll have no choice but to replace the whole thing.

If you want to save money and prolong the life of your bed mattress, buy a Tight Top and buy an additional Top. Ones like the Tempurpedic mattress topper is very popular as its memory foam is body conforming and provides excellent comfort and support.

Lastly, the Core Support consists of, among other things, the innersprings. You can rest assured that an S and F comes with the best you can buy.

Now, there’s the question of the boxspring. S and F advises customers to always purchase a new boxspring along with the mattress. It claims the boxspring gives additional support and can prolong the life of the mattress. There are many who disagree. If a Stearns and Foster mattress is the best – as it claims – surely a mattress of this quality, being more than 12″ thick, using the best coil springs should be more than capable of giving you all the support you need.

Companies like to sell boxsprings because it’s additional sales revenue. If you’re a fan, then by all means get one, but if you aren’t or are undecided, forget about it and save yourself a lot of money.

I hope this buying review of a Stearns and Foster mattress has been helpful. The company’s products are excellent; but by knowing what to look for you can save money and make up you own mind if it’s the best bed mattress for you.

Spring Air Mattress Reviews

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 01 30th, 2010

Spring Air mattresses have a reputation as luxurious bedding. From the spinal alignment properties of a BackSupporter to the eco-friendliness of a Nature’s Rest, Spring Air is often discussed in mattress reviews, and gets high marks. Let me take a couple of minutes of your time, and tell you a little about the mattresses available from Spring Air.

In consumer mattress reviews of all sorts, the Spring Air Back Supporter mattress gets raves as not only a comfortable sleep surface, but as a clinical support tool for people who suffer from lower back pain. The patented innerspring design helps keep the spine aligned, reducing stress on a person’s backbone, and allowing them a restful and recuperative sleep period.

Now, the Spring Air Back Support mattress isn’t cheap. But how expensive it is depends on the perspective of the owner. Compared to the cost of visiting a chiropractor for ten or twenty years, the mattress is really very affordable. And no, the mattress won’t eliminate those appointments, but it can reduce the number of doctor or chiropractic visits you have to make.

The other mattress on our list for today is the Spring Air Nature’s Rest mattress. Made with all-natural materials, including the latex foam, this mattress is great for people that suffer from allergy problems and other air-borne health concerns. Where other foam mattresses are made from chemical compounds, the Spring Air latex mattress uses only natural latex, which is derived from plants.

Comfort and better health combine in Spring Air products to give consumers the best rest available. Spring Air is even used in many clinical settings, where the products are designed for people with medically related sleep needs. For more information on this aspect of the Spring Air, readers may want to look through some of the reviews available online. A wealth of information is available, but it is beyond the scope and space available here.

One other complaint that is sometimes heard about the Spring Air mattress is that it is not as durable as one might expect. Simulated laboratory tests show that the expected lifespan of the Back Supporter is only around 10 years, while the Nature’s Rest can be expected to last for as much as 20 years. Comparatively speaking, neither of these results is unusual for mattresses of the respective types, since all sleep surfaces become “imprinted” over time. In fact, Spring Air has been shown to last as much as 25% longer than other mattresses from competitor companies.

Restonic Mattress Reviews

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 01 26th, 2010

Restonic is in the top ten of mattress companies in the U.S. It makes a variety of different types of mattresses from the traditional inner spring through to memory foam mattresses to even magnetic mattress. Here are some reviews of the different Restonic mattresses.

The ComfortCare range of mattress is a traditional inner spring mattress. The company uses – like every other company – a plethora of jingoistic terms to promote its products. The first such term is the ‘Marvelous Middle’. Basically, the middle has more springs that are strategically placed to give the sleeper a better night’s sleep. This is old hat. Manufacturers have been building mattresses with better support in the middle since they first began making mattresses. Again, we’re also told about SpiraLok Technology and how it reduces motion transfer. Again, it’s a piece of wire that is wound around the top of each coil. Many manufacturers employ something similar. And, with any inner spring mattresses you’re always going to experience some motion transference no matter who made it. Finally, each Restonic mattress in the ComfortCare range comes with SuperEdge Plus Technology. This is just a piece of high density foam wrapped around the edge of the mattress; its job is to encase the springs. I don’t know of any manufacturer of high quality mattresses that does not do this.

So, how does the ComfortCare mattress rate? Well, its reviews are generally favorable but many seem to prefer a Sealy Posturepedic, but the Restonic is a lot cheaper.

Restonic also make air mattresses. They’re cheap and often used in trailers and camper vans. If you really are interested in a good quality air bed mattress then you’d be better advised to look at a Simmons Luxaire.

The Providence is a latex mattress from Restonic. The company buys in its latex from a company called Latex Foam International. However, Restonic isn’t the only company that buys in its latex from Latex Foam International; other top brands include the Sealy SpringFree, Simmons BeautyRest, Serta Perfect Day, Stearns and Foster to name but a few. So, if you are thinking of buying a latex mattress from any of these companies you will be buying the same product. Each company, will offer different takes on it though, whether it’s firmness, damask coverings or some other slick sales pitch. The Restonic mattress will be of the same quality as any of them so base your decision on price and forget about the sales pitch.

The memory foam mattress is in vogue right now so it isn’t surprising Restonic has its own version called the HealthRest. You get a high density foam base (non memory foam), a layer of convoluted foam (to dissipate body heat) and a final top layer of memory foam. The configuration of each of these will depend on the model you choose. The overall opinion of the Restonic memory foam mattress is that it sleeps a little on the soft side and can develop depressions fairly quickly. However, this is a general problem with any memory foam mattress.

Restonic make mattresses that are probably as good as any of the big players, especially its inner spring and latex versions. Consumer reviews generally give a pretty good ranking to a Restonic mattress, especially the ComfortCare range.

Kingsdown Mattress Reviews – Sealy, Serta, Simmons Comparison

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 01 22nd, 2010

Interested in a Kingsdown innerspring-based mattress? If so, this article has some important information that you need to know.

My research team has conducted thorough mattress research by collecting data from thousands of actual mattress owners.

Based on this research, Kingsdown innerspring-based mattresses (not memory foam or latex based) ranked behind Sealy and about equal to Simmons. It performed significantly better than Serta and Spring Air.

Specifically, about 58% of the over 100 Kingsdown innerspring mattress owners included in our research found their bed to be comfortable.

Compared to non-innerspring beds, such as airbeds, memory foam beds, waterbeds and latex beds, Kingsdown scored well below these bed types as did virtually all innerspring mattress brands included in our research.

The primary reason that Kingsdown brand did not score better among its owners has to do with sagging of the mattress. The owners often complained of the bed losing support and developing body impressions or sink holes within just a few years or even months after purchase, even if they flipped or turned the bed regularly.

Kingsdown is not alone in regard to having a significant sagging issue. All of the innerspring mattresses in our research have a noteworthy sagging problem, according to their owners.

Finally, I should point out that our research does not rate particular models, but rather the brand as a whole. Consequently, there may be some Kingsdown models that perform better than others. And Kingsdown also offers non-innerspring beds, and these may be more competitive than their innerspring-based beds.

Before You Buy, Know The Facts About A Jamison Mattress

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 01 13th, 2010

A mattress is a major purchase, not only because of cost but also because of the amount of time you’ll be sleeping on it. If you’re thinking of buying a top quality mattress and are considering buying a Jamison mattress, here are some things you should know.

Jamison has been making mattresses since 1883 and has a reputation for making the world’s finest mattresses. Jamison has over 400 retailers in the south-east of the United States and has commercial associations with Intercontinental Hotels, Choice Hotels, and a 40-year history with Marriott. On Oct. 5 Marriot announced the launch of a totally redesigned bed. Jamison was awarded the contract to manufacture the mattress – beating off rivals from around the world.

It isn’t just hotels that rate a Jamison mattress as being the best; many consumer mattress reviews also place a Jamison mattress as being the best money can buy. But why is a Jamison mattress so highly rated? Well, the answer lies in the fact that Jamison only use the best materials available, employ the latest mattress technology and make a range of mattresses to suit everyone’s needs.

Mattresses have been using innersprings for many years. However, Jamison has taken the innerspring a stage further. Jamison took the world’s best coil – the tempered steel, fine wire LFK coil which is open-ended and double offset – and engineered it to produce the Jamison Smart Coil. Smart Coils are put together with alternating right-turn and left-turn construction. When weight is applied the two coils work in tandem, thereby reducing partner disturbance. You can find this inner spring system in the Jamison Balance, Equalizer, and Vita Pedic mattresses.

Unlike innersprings, which are connected together, pocket springs are individually contained in their own fabric pocket. The springs operate independently of each other so that ‘wave’ motion, produced by your partner’s turnings, is kept to the absolute minimum. Jamison has married the pocket coil system with the finest conjugate fibers and cashmere to produce one of the world’s most comfortable mattresses. Jamison employs this top-end pocket spring mattress in its Crest Collection mattress.

But has Jamison kept pace with the latest innovations in mattress design?

Memory foam mattresses have been a revelation in the last few years. Many people with chronic back pain have experienced the unbelievable benefits of sleeping on a memory foam mattress. Basically, memory foam responds to weight and temperature and conforms to the exact contour of the sleeper. Viscoelastic foam helps relieve pressure points and to give the correct spinal support many consumers find therapeutic.

Jamison has now started manufacturing its own version of memory foam mattress. Actually, Jamison produces three varieties of memory foam mattresses; Talalay latex, Visco memory foam and Omalon foam. All three varieties are used in the Jamison Resort Foam range of mattresses. Jamison claim, that with a latex mattress, you never need to turn the mattress and the exclusive Jamison Comfort Support System lets you choose which comfort level you desire. However, it should also be pointed out that latex doesn’t last as long as does the visco-elastic material used in TEMPUR; the material used in the making of a Tempur-Pedic mattress.

However, a memory foam mattress is not to everyone’s liking – lacking the springiness and softness of traditional inner-coil mattresses. So, if you prefer a more traditionally made mattress then a Jamison mattresses might be the one for you; Jamison mattresses score highly in many consumers’ reviews.

It has to be said that a Jamison isn’t the cheapest mattress on the market and may be out of the price range of many consumers – which is a shame. But, like most things you get what you pay for; a Jamison mattress does rank as one of the very best mattresses on the market today. And Jamison make a range of market leading mattresses, so there’s bound to be one to suit your requirements. When you consider that you spend a third of your life lying on a mattress the cost of a beautiful crafted, top-rated Jamison mattress offers real value for money.
