Creating a Great Living Space with Tiffany Floor Lamps

Posted by admin in Lamps on 12 22nd, 2009

Luminescent stained glass, ornate designs, deep and rich colors – these are just a few of the images that pop into your mind when you think of a typical Tiffany stained glass creation.
Since your home is always an extension of your personality and style, there is no better way to decorate it than by lighting it up with precious Tiffany lamps. So, what makes these Tiffany lamps so special?

Over the years, the name Tiffany has virtually become synonymous with elegance and style and is the preferred choice for people who believe that aesthetic appeal is as important as the functional
value of an object.

Louis Comfort Tiffany had a deep fascination for all things pertaining to nature and natural colors, and all of this is very evident in his elaborately designed and intricately patterned works of art. Art lovers
from all over the world will tell you that Tiffany is unique and has produced some of the most breathtaking designs that have earned worldwide recognition.

Since Louis Tiffany absolutely loved jewel rich colors like the ruby reds and the blues found in the Byzantium mosaics, he found different ways of incorporating these colors into his artwork.

If you are limited by the space in your home, then you can use Tiffany floor lamps to great effect and give your home a slight makeover. A Tiffany floor lamp is both functional and beautiful to look and because of its shape is easier to fit into small sized rooms and corner spaces where you probably aren’t going to fit any other appliance into. The added beauty of floor lamps, of course is that they help to create light in those dark edges of the room, especially if the room in question is an odd shape
(L-shaped spaces for instance).

With a wide range of innovative designs and styles to choose from, it isn’t really difficult to find the perfect Tiffany floor lamp. An important feature of all floor lamps is that the bulb plays a major role in imparting that special look that you so want for your room.

Choosing the right bulb is extremely important if you want to set the mood for a room, since every bulb gives a different effect. For example, the incandescent bulbs create a unique warm light and are often used by homeowners who want their homes to look cozy and comfortable. On the other hand, you have the halogen bulbs that are commonly used as reading lights because they make the room look bright and alive.

Used Appliance Parts

Posted by admin in Appliances on 12 21st, 2009

With the growing environmental concerns facing the world today, it only makes sense to use and reuse appliance parts that are still working properly. Why contribute to waste when you can help lessen it? Knowing how to buy and dispose of used appliance parts can not only save and make you money, but also help you contribute to environmental preservation.

Buying used appliance parts. Second-hand appliance parts are widely available over the Internet or in your local electrical shops, and they’re usually sold at half the price of brand new parts. Ask your technician if you can cut costs by buying used parts. Remember that it is better to invest in brand new parts in some cases, so seek professional advice.

If you have some knowledge of appliance repair, you can probably purchase and install these used parts yourself to save even more money. Beware of low-quality used appliance parts, though, because you may have to replace them after only a short period of time, causing you to spend more than you would have if you just bought brand new parts. Buy used appliance parts only from trusted dealers. They will disclose information on what the condition of the used part really is and advise you accordingly.

Selling used appliance parts. Instead of throwing away your used appliances, why not make some money out of them? Take them apart and sell components that are still working either directly to individual buyers or to local shops that specialize in second-hand appliance parts.

To sell directly to individual buyers, try looking at wanted ads in forums and other buy-and-sell sites; you are likely to find someone who needs an appliance part you happen to have. You can also post ads of your merchandise yourself and wait for interested buyers to contact you.

To sell your used appliance parts to a local shop, simply bring them in for an appraisal. Expect the shop to buy it from you at a low price – after all, they need to resell the parts at a profit. This option is best if you do not have time to sell your used appliance parts individually. The shop will likely buy in bulk and pay you upfront.

Kids Bunk Beds

Posted by admin in Kids Furniture on 12 21st, 2009

If you were ever a kid once then you know how important it is to have a cool room, because you are spending most of your time there. One great way to add some flair and adventure to your children’s rooms is through the use of a bunk bed. The great part about this is you can put more than one kid in the same room and it will save you space and money. And for most people those are two things that everyone can use more of. The great thing about kid’s bunk beds is that they come in so many different varieties. You can get beds that look like cars, spaceships, treehouses, just about anything you can imagine you can find. Some beds have ladders while others have slides, others have trampolines etc etc. One important thing to consider before buying bunk beds for your kids is to remember that most bunk beds should only be for people 9 years or older, otherwise the percentage of kids getting hurt on them greatly increases. So keep you kids safe and wait til they are nine or older to get them bunk beds.

A bunk bed can be a great present for you kids on birthdays or Christmas or for any occasion. Your kids will thank you and probably fight over who gets the top bunk. But either bed is a winner, top bunk feels like a tree house and bottom bunk feels like a cave. And to any kid that has an imagination these are both great options.

Discount Mattresses – Finding Excellent Mattresses at Discount Prices

Posted by admin in Mattresses on 12 21st, 2009

Tracking down discount mattresses goes beyond circling deals in your local newspapers. If you really want to find a great deal on a brand-name mattress, keep reading for hot hints and tips that will save your wallet and your sanity.

Get to North Carolina

While it may not be worth it if you live in South California, a trip to North Carolina could save you hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars on a mattress. Major mattress manufacturers like Sealy, Serta, Kenmore and Foster all have major factories and office locations in North Carolina – meaning you can find mattresses at real factory-direct prices.

If you’re traveling all that way, don’t just limit your search to the big name mattress manufacturers. Try finding some great deals by looking at the smaller mattress factories too. Often, these companies supply products from the big name mattress providers, so they’re offering the same product, but at a big discount price.

Always Ask for a Deal

Typically, mattresses have a huge markup and salespeople make big-time commissions. So, there’s always room to wiggle. You should never be afraid to haggle over the price of a mattress, to ask for free add-ons like bed wheels or mattress covers, or walk away from a price that you don’t feel is fair. Remember, the road to true discount mattresses isn’t necessarily easy.

Ignore the Model Names

Did you know that a number of major mattress manufacturers actually change the model name of their mattresses from one retail location to another? The reasoning behind this is to dissuade price comparison. So, instead of searching for a particular brand or model, just look for a mattress that’s actually comfortable for you.

Pursue Returned or Refurbished Models

Most department stores and mattress retail locations sell mattresses at heavily discounted prices if they’ve been returned within the 30-day trial period. While you should always test these products out, major discount mattresses prices can be found simply by asking the salesperson if they have any “returns” for sale.

Buy Near Month’s Last Day

When you buy a used car, you usually get the best deal by visiting on a quiet weekday at the end of the month. Discount mattresses are no exception. Improve your negotiation power by planning your shopping on a slow and dreary weekday near the end of the month and you’ll see savings as high as 20 percent off the retail sticker price.

Discount Stores Have Bargains

If you want to find discount mattresses, you have to shop at discount stores. Cheaper retailers like Zellers, Wal-Mart, Giant Tiger, or Target are all great places with solid customer service reputations that sell quality mattresses at discount prices.

Bean Bags Chairs Make Great Kids Furniture.

Posted by admin in Kids Furniture on 12 21st, 2009

I had forgotten just how comfortable bean bags are. I just recently purchased a kids beanbag chair for my granddaughter and tried it out – just to bring back old memories. Beanbags are the funkiest type of chairs and the comfort is unbelievable. Bean bags are actually very conducive to good health of ones back and spine in that the bags prevent any excess stress. This prevents any long or short term damage to ones back joints and ones health in general, just right for kids growing up.

Beanbags chairs make great furniture that is flexible enough to support ones back, regardless of their position.
Bean bags are
Comfortable to sit in while watching TV or just hanging out Fun to play on, kids love to romp and roll on them They are colorful and come in many different styles and materials Long lasting and hard wearing Make great furniture Can be used anywhere.
My granddaughter has already learned to jump from the sofa onto the soft chair and takes great delight in doing so. Bean Bags chairs are full of soft filler and because Bean Bags chairs are frame-less, there are no hard edges or sharp corners for a child to bump into. The urethane foam inside is said to last much longer than those “beans” which the old style bean bags contained when I was growing up. It is the urethane foam that is responsible for the chair having that soft, spongy and shape-able effect. I am certain that this chair will provide her with many years of fun and comfort.

Bean Bags are easy to clean. The kid’s bean bag chair that we bought has a removable cover as do many quality bean bag chairs. When the kids spill their grape juice all over it, don’t worry too much about it being ruined. All you have to do is to wipe away the mess from the Bean Bag chair before it dries. If you didn’t see the accident, then it is a simple matter of unzipping the cover and washing.

Many kids chairs are filled with polystyrene beads and some models feature cores that come with a child-resistant, locking zipper, making refilling easier while protecting your child by keeping them out of the filling.

Even though she is old enough to climb up onto the couch by herself, she now prefers her own place to sit.

Make your children happy and surprise them with this adorable, fun and very comfortable for seating Kids Bean Bags. Choose any of these decorative and imaginative beanbag chairs for all the kids in your life.

After a fun day of play our granddaughter will settle down to watch TV or read a book on her beanbag chair. She loves the comfort and fun of her own bean bag chair.
I can still see the look of surprise and the laughter when she first tried her bean bag chair. I think I’ll get one and join her on the floor.

Bedroom Furniture – Eco-Friendly Bedroom Decorating

Posted by admin in Bedroom Furniture on 12 18th, 2009

If you want to improve your health and help the Earth, there are many ways you can infuse environmentally sound living practices into your everyday life. One way to do this is through home decorating. Given the importance of a good night’s rest, perhaps the first place to being eco-friendly decorating is your bedroom. From bedroom furniture to linens, there are very simple, easy ways to alter your bedroom that will benefit both your health and the environment.

To begin with, we want to ensure that the air we breathe is clean and free from toxins. While this seems rather obvious, often small steps to improving air quality in our homes are overlooked. For example, proper ventilation can make a big difference. Use of fans and windows gets air circulating and keeps air fresh. In the bedroom, you want to make sure that you wash your bed linens and curtains on a consistent basis to keep out mites and minimize dust. Similarly, just by regularly dusting your bedroom furniture will improve the air quality of your room.

When it comes to your bed linens, try to buy organic. Many bed linens are treated with chemicals – fire retardants, formaldehyde, and various synthetic materials treated for various reasons. Organic linens are made from non-genetically modified cotton grown without pesticides. This is becoming increasingly popular, resulting in mainstream manufacturers producing large volumes of organic bed linens. In other words, if you want organic sheets and blankets, you’ll have no trouble finding a wide variety. You should also consider natural cotton pillows and wool blankets, as down products are often chemically treated.

There are a number of ways to integrate environmentally sound practices when it comes to bedroom furniture. The simplest means of recycling furniture is by reusing furniture. If you have some old pieces that no longer accommodate one space, try them in another. You can also always refurbish and reupholster furniture with natural finishes and natural fabrics. If you are looking to replace bedroom furniture, there is no shortage of eco-friendly options available. A number of manufacturers offer furniture crafted of recycled materials. Others offer furniture crafted from sustainably harvested and/or untreated materials.

Whether you are looking to completely redo your bedroom with a new Eco-friendly platform bed, or you are simply looking for small ways to improve the quality of your room, you can make changes that will benefit your health and the environment.

Increase the Selling Power of Your Home With Furniture

Posted by admin in Furniture on 12 18th, 2009

A big mistake home sellers make is trying to sell a home without furniture. It really detracts from the value of your house. For example when my wife and I were looking to buy a house I absolutely fell in love with one of them and thought this is definitely the house for me. My wife wasn’t quite so sure about it so we waited a few weeks and we went back to have another look. I was sure it was the house for us nothing else even came close. The second time we went back the house was empty, the owner had moved out and there was absolutely no furniture in the house. Wow… I couldn’t believe it, the house now looked horrible and it was obvious that I was drawn to it by the furniture that was in it the first time. Now looking at an empty house and picturing our own furniture in there it was very unappealing. To matters worse I got a nice told you so from my wife, and yes, she really did know better. By having no furniture in the house that home owner lost thousands on the end deal and had to settle for way less then they otherwise would have got. So furniture in a house is a huge determining factor of the value of your home. The better the quality and design of the furniture the higher the perceived value of your home will be in the prospective buyers minds.

If you have to move out before the sale why not hire some furniture until the sale goes through? Of course selecting the right kind of furniture is easier said then done and there are now full-time professionals who specialize in dressing up your house to give it a better selling price. You have to select furniture that suits the size and shape of each room in your house. Also be very careful not overdo it with too much furniture and avoid clutter. Also if you select furniture that is too big it will make your house look smaller and this will only devalue it.

Almost everyone likes wooden furniture and with reselling your house in mind wood is a safe option as wooden furniture can look good in all homes and blend in with all shades and backgrounds. Apart from wooden furniture, metal furniture despite sounding cold can surprisingly look warm and friendly, as with wrought iron furniture. Wrought iron furniture is actually lighter then wooden furniture and usually takes up way less space. Another favorite is cane furniture and it is even lighter and requires very minimal space. I nice mix of wood and cane can look exceptionally good.

If you are not renting the furniture or if you own your own and your not to attached to it then you may consider selling your house as fully furnished. Most buyers will be willing and even expecting to pay more for a fully furnished home and not only will you increase the value of your sale it will save you all of those removalist hassles.

Appliance Repair Service Information

Posted by admin in Appliances on 12 17th, 2009

The following is useful information about major appliances. And examples of problems you may have.

You should always consult your manual! The manufacture usually will give you good advice on the proper way of maintaining your machine. If you don’t have the manual first try the internet or the manufacture to get one.

Example: My Kenmore Electric Dryer will run but does not heat.

Try: Checking your breaker box, Find the breaker for your dryer and shut it off and turn it back on then try your dryer. Note: some breakers in your main box need to be pulled all the way back to the off position to reset the breaker. (Not all but some do!)

Note: Gas or Electric Dryer

A clothes dryer can catch fire! Reported by the U.S. Fire Administration in January 2007 over 12,000 dryer fires occur every year! A clogged dryer vent adds to this risk. Keep your dryer vent clear and clean, this could save you a lot more than money. If your cloths take a long time to dry you might have a clogged vent. Flappers on dryer vent caps can stick causing this problem; a kinked dryer vent hose can cause a log dry time, the vent could be full of lint, make sure it is maintained. And if you can’t do it yourself have a professional service company check you’re venting on your dryer.

Let’s move on to the refrigerator. Most refrigerators like: Subzero, Kenmore, Whirlpool, kitchen Aid, and Maytag have a condenser. This condenser is a cooling system for your refrigerators compressor, and the hotter it gets the harder it has to work and can shut down and even destroy the compressor if it gets too hot, A fan blows over this condenser and keeps it cool. When the condenser get dirty the compressor gets hotter and takes longer to do its job, this cost you more money in electricity and shortens the life of the compressor. Some of these condensers are in a location where the customer can clean it. Of course, like I said before, you should look at your manual first and it should tell you how to clean your coils. You can use a coil cleaning brush that you should be able to purchase at home depot or lows. Just ask for a coil cleaning brush for your refrigerator. You will prolong the life of your refrigerator and save money by doing this maintenance on your refrigerator

Example: My garbage disposal will not come on.

Try: See if at the bottom of your disposal has a reset switch. (some times it is a little red button ) Just push it in. Try your disposal. If it hums then turn it off. Your motor is bad or it is jammed.

Example: My GE Dishwasher Does on work at all, No lights.

Try: Some Dishwashers are connected to a wall switch in the kitchen and if it is not on, the dishwasher won’t come on at all. Check all wall switches near the appliance and GFI Resets.

Example: My Dishwasher will not drain.

Note: if you recently had a disposal installed they may not have knocked out the plug for the dishwasher drain. You can check this by pulling off the dishwasher drain hose that is connected to the disposal, put a pen or pencil in the hole that the drain hose was connected to and see if it stops about 1 to 2 inches. if it does then the plug is still in and needs to be removed.

Example: My Magic Chief Oven Won’t Come on

Try: Some older ovens have a mechanical clock that has time bake on it… It must be in manual position for it to allow user to operate it. If it is not in manual the oven is operating in auto time bake, and won’t come on until it reaches the time it was set too.

Try: you can also check your breaker box to see if your breaker has tripped. Of course if these tips don’t help you, you should call an Appliance Repair Company. But….before you call an appliance service company keep in mind the following:

An average service fee is about $50 to $75, this does not include the repair labor or the cost of the part. This makes the average Washer repair or Dryer repair about $180.00 + Tax. Of course your appliance may have a more expensive repair or you could have a very minor and inexpensive appliance repair.

So let’s ask a few questions. How old is the Dishwasher? Or how old is the dryer? What shape is the Refrigerator in? Has it been maintained? What will it cost me to buy a new front load washer or that new stainless steel dishwasher? Oh yeah – and what name brand are you going to buy if you decide to buy a new appliance? A Whirlpool or Kitchen Aid, or How about Viking or Bosh? Don’t forget that extended warranty they will try to sell you at the checkout. Are you going to purchase a low end machine or high end appliance?

As I have said before, An Older Appliance is built like a Tank! If you have an older Appliance and don’t mind the look and it has been taken care of over the years. I would recommend that you fix it. Now if your appliance is not that old. (I bet you wish you would have read this article before you bought your appliance) It’s going to depend on what is broken and how old it is! The first thing is, did you buy that extended warranty? If not, then what is the warranty of what you have? (Example: A lot of refrigerator manufactures give you a 1 year on all parts and 5 years on the compressor and or seal system of the refrigerator. You will have to check on your appliance and the warranty information that came with it). If you don’t know call the manufacture of your appliance and have your Model & Serial number ready for them, they will usually help you determine your warranty.
