Contemporary Kitchen Furniture – Points to Remember

Posted by admin in Kitchen Furniture on 02 8th, 2010

When picking out contemporary kitchen furniture there are one or two things everyone should remember to avoid mistakes and an uneven finish to their new kitchen.

Firstly, don’t assume you know exactly what contemporary means in relation to kitchen furniture. Do your homework and look at what’s out there in terms of modern designs and ideas. You might be surprised at what constitutes contemporary furniture and decided that it isn’t for you after all.

Always think about your kitchen when you’re looking around showrooms. It’s very easy to let a salesman tell you that particular furniture will look great in your contemporary kitchen, but if he hasn’t seen your kitchen, how does he know? All kitchens are different in terms of light and space and will need different shapes and sizes of furniture to work effectively. Contemporary kitchen furniture is never one size fits all.

Perhaps the most important advice when it comes to picking out furniture for your kitchen is to remain consistent. If you go around picking out different bits and pieces without thinking about how they will go together, you can end up with a very disjointed and awkward looking kitchen.

Contemporary kitchen furniture needs to give off the impression of seamlessness and have clean lines in order to be authentic. This isn’t to say that your kitchen has to be a cold and sterile place to work in. You can add warmth and colour to your kitchen by using the right materials and accessories.

These are just a few useful tips to help you ensure you get the contemporary kitchen that suits your needs.

Floor Lamps For A Modern Decor

Posted by admin in Lamps on 02 7th, 2010

In terms of interior design the 1960s and 1970s were not decades that particularly made a positive impact. There is however one 1960s piece of decorative kit that holds a special place in my heart. I am referring to the omnipresent lava lamps. Their viscous lumps of wax came in a variety of psychedelic colors. You could find them in purple, lime green, pink and yellow amongst other shades. Lava lamp would become my main focal point whenever there was one around.

Whenever I was in a room with one, my attention went to it automatically, as if I was hypnotized by the suspended, vibrantly colored. I found them to be a completely innocuous pleasure and rather relaxing, especially if combined with Indian music and the scent of burning incense.

People my age buy the lava lamps that are manufactured nowadays out of nostalgia while youngsters are attracted to their retro look. They may be considered tacky and ordinary today but I find them curiously soothing. Maybe it is because they were invented in more buoyant times.

They are still being made today, bought by my generation for reasons of nostalgia and by young people who love the retro look of them. I know they’re trashy and unsubtle but there’s something strangely comforting about them. Perhaps they represent a more optimistic age. I may even possibly purchase one though it would not really sit in well with the rest of my décor. I guess it could be a curio or period piece, depending on how tongue in cheek I’m being when justifying it to my surprised friends who buy all their home deco gear from Ikea. Maybe it is not such a great idea after all: I probably wouldn’t get much work done if the trance-like state they used to put me in is anything to go by.

Nowadays you can also buy Plasma Lamps, but they are colder, soulless and far less personable than the good old lava lamp. My all-time favorite lava lamp color is purple as they make me think of Jimi Hendrix’ Purple Haze. Maybe psychology students should look at the links between someone’s favorite lava lamp color and their personality.

Craven Walker, the inventor of the lava lamp, chanced upon his discovery by accident and would not have had any idea as to his invention future cult status. Though lava lamps are harmless fun you should always read the manufacturers instructions: it proved a tragic mistake for a young man back in 2004. He was so eager for his lamp to come to temperature that he placed it on top of his stove to speed things up: the glass casing exploded and he was killed by a shard of heart that went straight through his heart. I have also heard of DIY lava lamps but this doesn’t sound like a very safe thing to do at home!

Serious Furniture For Serious Kids

Posted by admin in Kids Furniture on 02 7th, 2010

When you get furniture for your kids to eat meals on or do homework, it’s easy to choose the characteristics that matter the most. Just pick a style and color, and you are good to go. With an activity set, however, you need to find an area that your child will be interested enough in to enjoy their use enough to stay focused on their job at hand. These are just a few of the types of activity furniture that you can find for your child.

Musical Workstation. This is just one type of furniture that is available in different styles for different ages. Children love music and they will spend hours seated around this musical workstation while they use the different buttons, switches, and keys to make their own special tunes. Roads, roads, and more roads. Some of these are made for a special type of vehicle and others will work with a variety. Some are more elaborate and provide overpasses and underpasses with different places to drive to. Game Boards. Some of these activity centers have a multi game board top so that children can enjoy checkers, Chinese checkers, backgammon and more. Art Works. They may offer a paper holder at the end of the station and a paper cutter (child safe) on the other end to cut the paper to the size needed. Just roll off the paper you need. Most have storage space for tools to keep the surface area clear where all of the art work can be completed. Building Blocks Surface. These centers have an entire top surface that is made with the same pattern as your favorite blocks. Just start building and you can continue until you have a whole city or start all over every day. Train Station. Boys love to play with trains and they will enjoy them even more when they have the area that is designed just for running their locomotives along the tracks, through tunnels, and all around the town. Sand and Water. These should offer sections that allow you to keep sand and water separate as well as those where you can mix it together. Moving parts increase the fun as do molds for making all types of special shapes from the mixture of the two textures.

Activity centers can be used inside or outside, for one child or a group. Only those made for the youngest kids should be without seats. If you get an activity center that is for older kids that doesn’t come with seats, then you should be sure to get them separately and make sure they are the right size to go with the center.

Keep in mind when shopping for the best activity center for your child that the more that is left to the imagination, the better. Versatility is also important. Kids aren’t as likely to spend a lot of time playing with the same thing in the same way over and over.

A Tip For Moving Furniture Around the House With Plastic Sheet

Posted by admin in Furniture on 02 6th, 2010

If you are rearranging furniture in your house, or even moving it to a new location, professionals have a few tricks of the trade to make moving easy and smooth.

The sheet I use is clear heavy duty sheet. It is four times the thickness of those flimsy ‘one use’ furniture covers, and more like the ’scuff proof’ grade used by sofa manufacturers.

Indeed furniture shops / warehouses may be the place for the amateur mover to scrounge some old sheet.

If you are moving a wardrobe, refrigerator or chest of drawers, plastic sheet is a useful tool:
Fold up the sheet so it is a least 4 folds thick. You should end up with a long rectangle, and the piece to be moved will be placed on one end of it… You will pull on the other end. The sheet should be of a width sufficient to take the piece but also pass through doorways without scrunching up and jamming.

You may not even have to move the furniture to get the sheet underneath: You can tip up one end of the piece (just a few degrees), and shovel enough plastic underneath it, then put the piece down and tip up it’s other end to pull the plastic out.

Not only can tall objects be easily moved through doors, but tight right angles in corridors can be optimally traversed.

Heavy fridges become easy to move.

We also use plastic sheet to move pianos: When a piano has to be up-ended 90 degrees to get into a doorway from a tight corridor…

We usually remove the bottom frame (kick board), the desk (the panel the written music sits on) and the key cover. Take care that the piano’s top lid does not overhang the sides… If it is so constructed, the lip of the top may collide with metal carpet edging… in which case a cushion (well placed) between the plastic sheet and the upturned side of the piano will keep the lip off the ground

The process of pulling on the sheet is smooth and controlled, so a lot of bumping is avoided: It is kind both to your furniture and to your house.

Mostly two people are needed: One to tip up the furniture whilst the other arranges the plastic. One person should push the piece while one pulls on the plastic. Two to watch both sides and call out to avoid bumping and scraping.

On the other hand, the technique can at a pinch allow single handed maneuvering in some circumstances.

I always use plastic sheet for soft furnishings, like sofas and mattresses. Sofas that have to be up ended to get through doorways can scuff or even tear. Use heavy sheet secured with parcel tape to encase the piece.. and always take the feet off first.

Mattresses are heavy and pick up dirt easily. The heavier they are, the more certain it is that they will touch the ground.

Another trick my clients enjoy is to pick up a single mattress, sheets, pillows duvets, cuddly toys and all, and wrap it up tight in sheet. After moving, we then unwrap it and place it back on the bed ready for use with a minimum of redressing.

Plastic sheet can really make moving easier.

Patio Furniture Storage

Posted by admin in Patio Furniture on 02 2nd, 2010

If you live in an area where the use of patio furniture is seasonal you have to find a place to store it when it’s not in use.  Sometimes it can be difficult to find the most appropriate place to store your patio furniture, but it is when that thought becomes most apparent that self-storage units may be the best bet for placing any items.  Not all self-storage places have the same prices or fees for storage of items, and not all spaces are equivalent to each other, however it is this current air of competition that creates some idea of what to choose and how to choose the best place for storing your summer patio furniture.

There are many good measures to take when you need to place your unused patio furniture into storage, such as dust covers.  It is best to compare storage unit prices and to involve yourself in research when your particular interest is in how to better house your patio furniture.  The most adequate research can involve first by looking on the internet for local storage companies.  Give each a call, compare storage fees and the various space sizes that are available.

Ask such questions as to whether each facility is indoor or outdoor entrances many differing locations will usually have more than just one size to allow the storage of items as large as couches and beds.  However, remember if the unit has indoor entries, although indoor storage units  are usually air conditioned, make sure that the space around the doorway entrance is large enough that it is not going to be a task to get your patio furniture or any other large furniture items in and out of the unit.

Some storage units will be cheaper for less space, but sometimes a person will be capable of finding a better deal with the right amount of research utilized in the task of acquiring the needed space for storage.  Distance is very much a factor to making convenience a capability for the person placing their items and patio furniture into storage.  Again, a good place to start is the internet, but remember, it is not the only place to find a better understanding of the self-storage facilities.

Ambience Table Lamps – Produce Ambience in Your Residence With Table Lights

Posted by admin in Lamps on 02 2nd, 2010

Ambience table lamps are making a comeback as the ultra-cool design accessory in the shabby chic decorating trend. So, consider getting into that attic or digging out that crawl space to unearth those antique table lamps that your grandma left to you.

For five ways you can incorporate table lights into your decorating to create mood, character and coziness in your space, keep reading.

Lighting for the Living Room

Ambience table lamps in the living room serve two purposes – they’re decorative and they offer functional lighting without the need to turn on the bright overhead light. For example, if one family member is reading a book, but another wants the light low to prevent a glare on the television, directed side table lighting is the ideal solution.

Get matching lights and lamp shades that blend in well with your existing home décor. You want your table lamps to blend in with the room, not stand out in contrast.

Kid’s Room Nightlight

Table lamps are great for kid’s rooms as bedside lamps. A small, shaded lamp is perfect for times when you need a little bit of light but don’t want to switch on the harsh and bright ceiling light. For example, when it’s time to wind down for bed and someone wants a story, a soft table light can be the best solution.

Table bedside lamps are also great for kids who are a little scared of the dark. They can turn off their wall outlet, but still have a light that they can turn off once they’re safely in bed.

Task Lighting

Table lamps are great for task lighting. Anywhere you need directed and focused lighting that’s close to your work surface, a table lamp can do the job and reduce strain on your eyes. If you’re using a table lamp for task lighting, look for one that has a flexible head and neck, thus allowing you to direct the light on to your work surface.

Design and Decorative Purposes

A light doesn’t always have to totally utilitarian – it can be decorative too. Fancy or antique table lamps are beautiful accent pieces for a formal dining room, living room or bedroom. They’re also practical, offering a soft and romantic glow.

Desk Lamps

Ambience table lamps are a much better office lighting solution than harsh overhead lights. The directed task lighting not only allows you to focus on your paperwork, but it can also reduce glare reflected from your monitor, thus preventing eye strain. Try two desk lamps instead of an overhead light and see the improvement for yourself.
